Wells Fargo initiative brings hope to small businesses this holiday season

Hope, USA invests in small business revitalization efforts and encourages shoppers to support small and local businesses.

An outline of the United States surrounds a woman in a doorway of a shop with a sign that says Welcome to Hope USA Wells Fargo.

Wells Fargo is reaffirming its commitment to supporting small businesses by giving a little hope.

Hope, USA is a nationwide initiative to share hope with Wells Fargo’s customers, communities, and beyond. In preparation for the holidays, the company is investing in beautifying business districts in more than a dozen cities across the country and encouraging everyone to join in by shopping locally and supporting small businesses as they emerge from the economic impact of the pandemic.

“After a tough couple of years, small businesses across America are working hard to get back on their feet. Wells Fargo wants to build on their hope and resiliency by bringing our resources so that small businesses can become more stable, strengthen our local communities, and lead the way toward a greater sense of normalcy we all crave.” — Bill Daley, vice chairman of Public Affairs at Wells Fargo

There are many ways to give hope a hand this holiday season by shopping locally and supporting local small businesses, such as:

  • Write a review of a small business.
  • Schedule an in-person or virtual meeting over a meal or snack from a local café, deli, or restaurant.
  • Buy your pet a special treat from a local pet store.
  • Get your next book for book club at the local bookstore.
  • Remember that small businesses offer gift cards.
  • Shop at diverse-owned businesses.
  • Buy turkey from a local farmer or co-op for Thanksgiving.
  • Try a new ethnic food from a local restaurant.
  • Buy gifts for children in need from a local toy store.

Helping small businesses through the pandemic

Championing small business has always been a priority for Wells Fargo for decades. But, like many other aspects of everyday life, the COVID-19 pandemic showed the company new ways to accomplish something it’s done effectively for years.

Through the Paycheck Protection Program, or PPP, Wells Fargo has helped hundreds of thousands of small businesses get the resources they need to keep their doors open, their employees paid, and their customers’ needs met. Wells Fargo served approximately 282,000 customers with PPP loans, with nearly $14 billion in needed liquidity representing more than 1.7 million* jobs.

The fees associated with PPP lending in 2020, totaling roughly $420 million, were used to create the Open for Business Fund to provide support for small businesses, with a focus on Black, African American, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, and other diverse entrepreneurs. Through Sept. 30, the Open for Business Fund has already distributed $305 million in grants and is estimated to help nearly 150,000 small businesses and enable them to maintain approximately 250,000 jobs.

This past August, Wells Fargo announced Connect to More℠, an initiative focused on mentoring 500 women-owned business, and a second phase of funding from its Open for Business Fund aimed at providing grants to 93 nonprofits so they can offer access to experts who can help entrepreneurs grow their businesses.
