To grow a successful career, ‘always think about tomorrow’

Jan Blomstedt credits her successful 35-year tenure with Wells Fargo to being proactive and remaining open to opportunities.

It may sound cliché, but what makes Wells Fargo special is its employees — employees like Talent Acquisition superstar Jan Blomstedt. Blomstedt’s history with the bank began when, as a college graduate, she took a role as a teller and never looked back. Her tenure is 35 years and counting, a remarkable achievement. Blomstedt credits her success to her time spent on the front lines in branches, learning the customer experience and the bank’s core values. As a natural self-starter, she has never stopped learning or being curious, which has led to multiple advancements. Project Management roles led to Human Resources positions, which turned into the Talent Acquisition role she holds today.

Throughout her successes, Blomstedt has remained humble, rolling up her sleeves and staying open to new opportunities that resulted in growth in unexpected directions. To others looking for growth opportunities, her advice is: “Always think about tomorrow. Continue learning, be willing to work hard, don’t wait for it to be handed to you, and grow from there.”

Today Blomstedt manages the digital presence for Wells Fargo’s Global Talent Acquisition, where she helps tell the story of working at Wells Fargo, providing support to the Global Recruiting Team. “Not in my wildest dreams did I imagine I’d be part of a social team supporting over 500 recruiters globally,” she said. “You never know where you’ll end up.”

Blomstedt credits part of her success to taking a proactive stance in her career and remaining open to opportunities. She has also focused on her personal strengths, discovering that she has “harmony” as a core competency through a program called Clifton StrengthsFinder®. This trait is unique at a bank that tends to have teams stacked with “achievers” and “activators.” This perspective helps keep the culturally and regionally diverse team (from Oregon to the Philippines, London to India, North Carolina, and beyond) working together cohesively.

Throughout her tenure, Blomstedt has seen a lot of changes at the bank, but said one thing remains constant. “Wells Fargo definitely appreciates their employees, providing robust benefits packages and employee programs, and leadership is supportive.” She applauds the diversity of thought in leadership, which allows for multiple perspectives, pushing the envelope on initiatives, and trying new things. “The collaborative, diverse environment ensures your voice is always part of the conversation,” she said.

When not conducting global business, Blomstedt enjoys spending time outside and with her family. “The pace at work can be intense, so I enjoy family time to keep me grounded and happy.” Her best piece of advice is to “be open to constantly learning. You never know where it will take you.”
