Wells Fargo donates $575,000 to support disaster relief
Donations will help relief efforts in Puerto Rico, Mexico, and Asia following natural disasters.
Wells Fargo is donating $575,000 to help with relief efforts in Puerto Rico, Mexico, and Asia following natural disasters that caused widespread damage.
“Natural disasters don’t respect borders, and the tragedies they produce remind us of our shared humanity,” says Alejandro Hernandez, head of Global Social Responsibility for Wells Fargo. “Given the global diversity of our team members, customers, and partners, it’s important that Wells Fargo supports relief efforts in the wake of these recent events.”
Wells Fargo is also donating $200,000 to the American Red Cross to support relief and recovery efforts in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria, which hit the island as a Category 4 storm on Sept. 20.
The grant will help emergency responders provide supplies to the region and support shelter efforts for those affected by the storm. It will also help people in the region rebuild the homes, businesses, and schools that were destroyed by Hurricane Maria.
In Mexico, Wells Fargo is donating $250,000 to the American Red Cross to assist with relief efforts in areas of central Mexico that were devastated by the Sept. 19 earthquake.
The 7.1-magnitude earthquake killed more than 330 people, injured hundreds more, and destroyed buildings and homes throughout the region. The donation will help rebuild key infrastructure in central Mexico.
Wells Fargo is donating $125,000 to United Way Worldwide to help with relief efforts in Asia following widespread flooding — $100,000 will support United Way Bengaluru in India and $25,000 will support Friendship, a social services agency in Bangladesh that is helping with relief efforts in the region.
Heavy rains in August caused flooding throughout India and Bangladesh, leading to more than 1,200 deaths and affecting 40 million people in the region. Wells Fargo’s grant will help rebuild houses in India and support Friendship’s efforts to provide food, clean water, and building reconstruction in Bangladesh.
