Creating hope for the homeless

To serve homeless kids in western North Carolina, a part-time Wells Fargo teller puts his passion for volunteerism to work through a nonprofit he started.

On any given day, some 200,000 children in the U.S. have no place to live. In 2009, Michael Absher was one of them. Now, as an adult, he’s lending a helping hand to kids struggling like he did.

“There is no reason why any child should be homeless,” says Michael, who lived in a homeless shelter for a year-and-a-half while he was in high school.

A part-time teller in Hendersonville, North Carolina, Michael founded Only Hope WNC, a nonprofit that supports homeless children in western North Carolina. Only Hope WNC works with Henderson County Schools and community agencies to provide school supplies, food, clothing, toiletries, and other items to children in need.

Michael says one of the nonprofit’s main goals is to open a shelter, and the money he received as a Wells Fargo Volunteer Service Award winner will go toward that goal.

Michael’s work earned him a spot among Fortune’s 2015 “Heroes of the 500,” in which the magazine celebrates “remarkable acts of goodness” by people who work for Fortune 500 companies.
