Classroom volunteer welcomes immigrants with time — and heart

Volunteering weekly at the Chinese Education Center in San Francisco, George Cruys helps young immigrants get their start in the U.S.

“When we speak from the heart, kids hear it,” says Victor Tam, principal at the Chinese Education Center in San Francisco.

The center aims to ease the transition to the U.S. for young Chinese immigrants. The kids attend classes for one year before moving on to mainstream schools. The faculty teaches as much English as possible in the time they have with students. And the school also relies on its community — and volunteers like George Cruys — for support.

George, with Wells Fargo’s Wealth, Brokerage and Retirement group, says, “I come here … to show the kids that there is someone who is not Chinese who is happy that they’re here.” George has been a regular volunteer at the center for 12 years.
