Building confidence when ‘it isn’t easy to talk about money’

In Oregon, a retired couple found the advice — and technical expertise — they need to manage their spending after visiting the local Wells Fargo banking store.

Retirees Paulette and Chris Drake live on a fixed income and knew they needed help budgeting. They knew online tools were an option, but entering their financial information on a website they weren’t familiar with was a concern.

Enter Julian Salazar, who met with Paulette and Chris at their local Wells Fargo in Portland, Oregon. Julian, who has since been promoted from personal banker to store manager, introduced them to a Wells Fargo online tool to help the couple track their spending. (That’s Julian with Paulette in the photo above.)

“Julian took the time on that first visit — and subsequent visits — to answer my questions,” Paulette says. “I loved that he really listened to me and made me feel comfortable. That’s so important, because it isn’t easy to talk about money.”

“I came into the (store) anxious,” she says. “I was concerned about the budget and having to use a computer to tackle it. Julian helped me right away when I told him what we were hoping to do.”

Julian found it easy to connect with the Drakes because he, too, uses Budget Watch, part of Wells Fargo’s free online tool My Money MapSM. Having moved to Portland for better medical care for his young son, Julian says the tool has helped his family manage its money more effectively.

Wells Fargo guidance “helped ease our financial concerns.”

Once they gained confidence using Budget Watch, the Drakes set budgeting goals and say they found it easier to manage transactions online. A year later, Paulette says, “It’s taken a lot of pressure off of me because I don’t have to manually calculate our budget and save every receipt. Along with Julian’s guidance, it’s helped ease our financial concerns.”

Because they’re now monitoring their spending, they say they’re more confident about the future.

Julian checks in with the Drakes each quarter about their financial goals and how they’re doing. He says, “I’m just glad the Drakes benefit from our guidance and online tools.”

Soon after the Drakes connected with Julian, Paulette wrote a letter to Wells Fargo calling him “one of the most knowledgeable, forthright and personable bank representatives I have ever met.”

“The day I walked through the Hollywood Rose City bank and met Julian Salazar was truly fortunate for us, but also for you because he represents Wells Fargo with integrity, knowledge and genuine care,” she wrote.
